Amidst buzz in education circles over technology as an agent of change and disruptive innovation, author Norm Friesen, a professor of educational technology, sets out to reframe the notion that our present-day educational system is unchanging and needs disruption. In doing so, he centers The Textbook and the Lecture on two of the oldest and time-tested educational forms. By looking backward at the histories and supporting philosophies of the textbook and the lecture rather than looking forward to the future of new media, Friesen helps readers understand, if not appreciate, that the presence of technology in education is not something new and that change in the field is evolutionary, not revolutionary. In the end, according to Friesen, Kindles? and iPads? are still textbooks, and MOOCs (massive open online courses) and podcasts are still lectures.
