Estimation of a finite population mean and total using population ranks of sample units

The importance of using any auxiliary information, if available, in survey sampling studies can improve statistical inference about the population. In this paper, it is proposed to use the ranks (or approximate ranks) of the population units before the selection of sample units. Based on this, new estimators for population total and mean in a finite population setting are obtained. Here, the proposed estimators require selecting a simple random sample from the population and identifying the population ranks of sample units where selection of the sample can be performed with- or without-replacement. Given these conditions on the population ranks, a set of weighted estimators are constructed. A bootstrap re-sampling procedure is developed to estimate the variances of the estimators and also to construct percentile confidence intervals for the population mean and total. It is shown that the new estimators provide a substantial amount of efficiency gain over their competitors. For illustration, the proposed sampling design and estimators are applied to Ohio corn yield data to estimate corn production. (27 refs.)
