In 2008,some 4 million Indian farmers cultivated Monsanto's genetically modified insect-resistant Bollgard and Bollgard II fit cotton on 17.2 million acres(7 million ha),a 19% rise over the previous year,reports Monsanto's Indian subsidiary,Mahyco-Monsanto Biotech(MMB).The company's Bt cotton lines accounted for about 76% of India's total cotton area of 22.5 million acres this year.In 2007,cotton was cultivated in nine states on 21.4 million acres,of which Bollgard lines were sown on 14.4 million acres(Agrow No 543,p 20).
