Editor: A recent report has demonstrated that fragments of DNA present in rabbit meat are taken up from the' alimentary tract at low efficiency and can be detected transiently in human blood by sensitive amplification tests, thus extending previous reports of such horizontal DNA transfer in mice, cattle, and poultry to the human species. Alimentary DNA uptake constitutes a possible explanation for the finding of a retroviral sequence initially named human retrovirus 5 (HRV-5), but later identified as a novel rabbit retrotransposon (RERV-H), which had been detected at low copy numbers in tissues from patients with chronic inflammatory diseases,4-5 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL),6-7 and a few blood donors. It remains unclear, however, why patients with chronic inflammations or lymphoma should have a more frequent or more efficient uptake of alimentary DNA than others. Contamination of patient samples by rabbit-derived laboratory reagents such as antisera or carryover of preamplified sequences thus remains a possible alternative explanation for at least some of the positive results.
