A Horticulture Week survey of 70 locaJ authorities has found that 87 per cent do not recycle plant pots from the kerbside. Now industry figures say the Government must provide guidance to councils telling them to recycle pots — and that the garden industry is doing all it can to make pots recyclable.Sixty-one councils said they do not and only nine said they do, meaning millions of easily recyclable plant pots are going into landfill every year. Recycling industry figures suggest 76 per cent of councils collect plastic pots, tubs and bottles, but that does not mean they collect plastic plant pots. There are an estimated 500 million pots produced a year.
