Against the background of weaknesses of current danger maps, like impreciseness and overall statements as results of data-, processing- and measurement errors, the present Decision Support System (DSS) offers an economical, time efficient and universally valid alternative to analyses generated by GI Systems. To estimate the hazard potential of any slope of interest the DSS is dependent on a precise knowledge base. Besides textual descriptions of comprehensive scientific literature it contains statistical evaluations of a multitude of alpine slope debris flow events representing the variability of this type of landslide. However the DSS does not give any descriptions of intensity, probability and specifications concerning the point in time. By applying the DSS, the complexity of a simulation process by GI Systems is avoided. Instead it enables, mainly users without any substantiated background in mapping and laboratory work, to access an immediately available and reliable working base for a refined analysis of their project area. The DSS generates realistic results by integrating all relevant parameters into a three-step decision procedure considering their diversity by combining statistics and stability calculations to contribute to a higher accuracy of existing simulation systems. This paper concentrates on preliminary investigation within the DSS, based on relief parameters only. For this purpose the paper prefixes a short compendium defining their threshold values.
