The State of Montana has been using benthic diatoms to assess water quality in wadeable streams since the 1970s. Here the authors give a brief history of diatom biocriteria development and water quality assessment in Montana and report on progress in developing a new generation of diatom metrics with an example from the Middle Rockies Ecoregion.
