Referring to the article "Will the real assistance dog please stand up?" in the December issue of dvm360, it's clear that neither Dr. Kay, his client, nor the author understand assistance animals.Service animals are covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). They are specifically trained to mitigate a disability. Businesses must provide access. No paperwork is required, nor can it be requested. A business may ask if the animal is required to mitigate a disability and follow up with asking what the animal is trained to do.
