摘要

In this issue, we highlight the many aspects of asthma and allergy education. It is well known that asthma education is a vital component of asthma management. However, despite national recommendations and positive outcomes attributed to educational interventions, asthma education is not being provided as often as it should be. In 2008, approximately 12% of people with current asthma received formal patient education. Several reasons have been cited in the literature by health care providers for not providing education, including high costs and lack of reimbursement. Although CPT codes for asthma education have been available since 2006, reimbursement for services has been low. In the study by Markus et al, the researchers conducted an assessment of approaches to securing Medicaid reimbursement for asthma education services. They found examples at the individual health center, Medicaid health plan, and Medicaid state program level for securing reimbursement. Findings of this study are useful for those seeking to develop and secure funding for asthma education programs. Mitigating the financial barriers associated with providing asthma education may facilitate the provision of asthma education and ultimately improve asthma outcomes. However, finances are just one obstacle to providing asthma education, workforce is another. The total number of asthma and allergy educators is unknown; however, we do know that there are only 4030 certified asthma educators (AE-Cs). And with 25 million people with asthma in the United States, it is no wonder we are falling behind national recommendations for asthma education. There are many asthma providers (licensed and unlicensed) in the United States who meet the National Asthma Educators Certification Board eligibility requirements.
