Spirotetramat (Movento~R) is a new, fully systemic and ambimobile insecticide particularly effective against a broad range of sucking pests, including aphids, white-flies, psyllids and scales. Due to the lack of any cross-resistance to existing chemical classes of insecticides, spirotetramat will be an invaluable new tool to manage insecticide resistance in many crops and pests worldwide. Its physicochemical properties are quite different compared with the tetronic acids spirodiclofen and spiromesifen. Spirotetramat shows excellent efficacy against species known to be difficult to control, e.g. woolly apple aphids and insecticide-resistant Q-biotype cotton whiteflies. Due to its mode of action particularly juvenile stages of sucking pest insects aredirectly affected by spirotetramat. The fecundity of adult whiteflies and aphids is also strongly affected. Spirotetramat exhibits an excellent systemic and translaminar efficacy, whereas its contact efficacy is rather limited. It shows very good crop safety, excellent photostability and it is active over a broad temperature range. Furthermore spirotetramat has a very good residual activity. Once penetrated into the plant spirotetramat is hydrolysed to its enol form. As a weak acid this compound is mobile within the phloem of the plant. Hence it can move acropetally and basipetally and control hidden pests. When applied fo-liarly spirotetramat even protects the roots from aphid attack. Due to its ambi-mobility newly-grown leaves that developed after the spray application are alsoprotected. These outstanding properties described as two-way systemicity are unique among recently developed insecticides.
