Short-Term Annoyance Due to Tramway Noise: Determination of an Acoustical Indicator of Annoyance Via Multilevel Regression Analysis

The tramway is a source of noise annoyance. Noise exposure levels proved not to be sufficient to account for this annoyance. Other acoustical factors linked to temporal and frequency features could further explain noise annoyance. Using a psychoacoustical approach, this study aims at determining an acoustical indicator of short-term annoyance due to tramway noise. A laboratory experiment is carried out in order to identify and characterize the influential acoustical factors. Subjects are asked to rate the short-term annoyance caused by 61 tramway pass-by noises, recorded in situ for different operating situations. A psychoacoustical analysis using verbalization task data and the annoyance data shows that the overall level, the irregular / continuous character and the bass / treble character of tramway noises influence noise annoyance. These acoustical features are taken into account through the following indices: the A-weighted equivalent sound pressure level (L_(A,eq,T)), the variance of time-varying A-weighted pressure normalized by RMS A-weighted pressure (VAP) and a proposed index, the total energy of the tonal components within critical bands from 12 to 24 Barks (TETC). A multilevel regression model combining L_(A,eq,T) and TETC proves to be satisfactory to account for short-term annoyance due to tramway noise.
