CMOS image sensors are very quickly replacing the CCD image sensors in various digital cameras in the last two or three decades due to the advantages of low power consumption, high read out time and on-chip functionality. Various architectures have been proposed in the literature for implementation of CMOS image sensors. The first architecture used for implementation of CMOS image sensors were Passive Pixel Sensors (PPS) where a transistor per pixel was used to read out the charge. This technology suffered from low sensitivity and low charge to voltage conversion. To overcome the problems of passive pixel sensor (PPS), a new architecture was proposed where an amplifier was placed in each pixel known as active pixel sensor (APS). APS suffered from low fill-factor (FF) and high dark current due to increase in number of transistors per pixel. In this paper, we present a new architecture where the amplifier/buffer is shared among certain number of pixels known as shared active pixel architecture (SAPA). The proposed SAPA circuit offers low dark current, high fill-factor and consumes less power as compared to conventional APS circuit. The circuits have been implemented in Cadence Virtuoso tools using 180 nm technology.
