摘要

Fritz Allhoff (2009) has written such an excellent introduction to the ethical issues surrounding nanomedicine that it is difficult to write an interesting open peer commentary on his article. With only a few exceptions, he is correct in his claim that nanotechnology rarely “raises any substantively new concerns; [it] only changes the context in which those concerns are realized” (3). That being said, since the morality of an action is determined by ends, means, and circumstance (i.e., context), there is still much work to be done. We need to examine this context, including the link between ethics and technology maturity (e.g., in the case of non-therapeutic use of artificial red blood cells), systemic interactions of nanomedicine with other phenomena (especially demographics and nuclear warfare), and privacy issues.
