A recent announcement by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) revealed that the pain management questions on the hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) surveys will change from speaking directly about the patient's perception of pain control while in the hospital to questions that reflect more the communication that the health-care team had with the patient about their pain (CMS, 2018). This change is effective from the January 1, 2018, patient hospital discharges, with the first public reporting due in October of 2019 with the hospital comparisons (Morse, 2016).
