Engineering students at the University of the Witwatersrand have raised R404 000 in pledges from alumni for computer equipment in a three-week fund-raising telethon, which ended on Friday, 13th September. The telethon, which was preceded by letters to all the alumni of the Engineering Faculty, was entirely a student initiative. It aimed to raise funds for computers for first- and second-year engineering students in particular. At present, students are having to make do with limited computer access, which severely hinders their successful training. The fund-raising drive was named the Wits Engineers' jubilee Campaign in honour of the Faculty's 75th anniversary in 1997. It was chaired by Professor Guerino Renzo Bozzoli, highly respected former head of Electrical Engineering, dean of the Engineering Faculty, and vice-chancellor of Wits University. The campaign involved telephoning some 3500 'contactable' Wits engineering alumni all over the world. This list comprised about half of the total Wits engineering alumni dating back as far as 1922.
