Intracoronary ultrasound (ICUS), intracoronary optical coherence tomography (IC-OCT) and intracoronary photoacoustic ICPA) are complementary imaging technologies for the invasive diagnosis and treatment of coronary atherosclerosis heart diseases. The multimodal imaging technology can accurately identify vulnerable plaques and analyze functional composition by the combined use of complementary imaging modalities. The purpose of this study is to design a method based on variance contribution rate (VCR) to fuse raw ultrasonic echoes, photoacoustic signals and OCT interference signals for ICUS-PA-OCT combined imaging. Combined grayscale images of vascular cross-sections are formed to display the morphology and functional composition of the vessel wall and atherosclerotic plaque tissues. The method was validated with computer-simulated coronary vessel mimicking phantoms. Results indicate that the fused signals preserve rich information of the morphological structure and chemical composition of the tissues. The joint images display the morphology and location of the plaque tissues with high spatial resolution, contrast and sensitivity.
