Field trials carried out between 1993 and 1997 in the Moscow oblast', Russia are described, in which different fertilizer systems for cultivated grassland were investigated for a dry valley with temporarily-excessive moistening and a dernopodzolic medium loam soil. Feeds obtained from grassland (Dactylis glomerata, Festuca pratensis and Phleum pratense) contained 97, 108, 121 and 138 g digestible protein/kg dry matter for the following systems respectively: no fertilizers (control); organic fertilizers; N180:P:K; and N240:P:K. Feeds produced using fertilizers had energy values of 10.8-10.9 MJ/kg. Mineral and organic fertilizers respectively increased humus content of the 0-20 cm soil layer to 2.55 and 2.62%, increased hydrolytic acidity to 242-292and 263 meq/kg soil, and increased mobile forms of P to 138 and 145 mg/kg. Use of N180-240:P60:K120 decreased content of exchangeable K in soil by 40-60 mg/kg. Grassland cultivation using mineral fertilizers was the most energy-efficient.
