Often relegated to obscure roles in the garden, Physo-carpus -- commonly known as ninebark -- has increased in popularity due to its unique beauty, versatility and utility in the landscape. The Nov. 1 issue of AMERICAN NURSERYMAN featured the first ofa two-part article on the ornamental qualities of ninebark studied by Longwood Gardens Inc., Kennett Square, PA (located in Zone 6), from 1999 to 2007. In its Physocarpus shrub trials, Longwood Gardens evaluated a total of seven commercially available ninebarks based on their characteristics of having unique leaf colors, more compact or uniform habits and better flower size and color. Four cultivars were featured in the first part of the feature: 'Monlo', 'Nanus', 'Dart's Gold' and 'Nugget'.
