Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), designated as 4106 strain, was isolated from the hip skin nodule and hock joint of a 79-day-old Dekalb layer chicken and identified by coaglase-positive, fermented mannitol, #beta#hemolysis and production of protease. Histologically, the hip lesion was diagnosed as bacterial fibrinopurulent inflammation with granuloma. Twenty one-day-old, 30 two-week-old and 20 four-week-old chickens were inoculated subcutaneously with the isolate and two known isolates of S. aureus of Hyogo (H) strain or Shiga (S) strain. At necropsy, all strains produced typical dermatitis with severe edema in dead chickens, and live chickens had caseous granulomatous lesions. Mortality of each group inoculated at one day old, two weeks old, and four weeks old with 4106 strain were 95%, 77% and 23%, and with H strain were 90%, 10% and 0%, respectively. In the flock affected by 4106 strain, mortalities were higher and the deaths appeared earlier than those of the other flocks.
