摘要

Brachystelma comptum N.E.Br. was described by N.E. Brown in 1908 (Brown 1908) in his treatment of the Asclepiadaceae for Flora Capensis based on a single herbarium specimen at Kew. The specimen, collected near Uitenhage "on hills overlooking the Zwartkops River", was one of Zeyher's earliest collections (Zeyher 9) and therefore must have been collected soon after his arrival in South Africa in 1822. One hundred and fifty five years later a second specimen was collected by Ernest Northover who discovered the plant while preparing a new lawn in his garden a few kilometres south of Grahamstown. Northover, a retired architect, presented the plant to his friend Roy Bayliss who identified it, made an herbarium specimen for GRA (Northover ex Bayliss 8163)and sent living material to the Botanical Research Institute in Pretoria. The species was later illustrated for Flowering Plants of Africa (Dyer 1982) based on the same material.
