When cutting conditions, such as cutting speed, thefeed and depth of cut in machining are increased, the cuttingefficiency greatly improves. An increase in cutting conditions,however, does not necessarily decrease cutting costs as an increasein cutting conditions results in shorter tool-life. This studyexamined the relationship between the turning of gray cast iron incutting conditions such as cutting speed, feed and depth of cut, andreduction of cutting costs. Cutting conditions such as feed anddepth of cut are incorporated into "Taylor's tool-life equation"toobtain (VFlDm Tn=C). This equation was used to determine andexamine an economic cutting speed which minimizes cutting costsand the minimum cutting cost.
