The ciliary epithelium secretes the aqueous humor into the posteriorchamber of the eye. Despite the physiologic and pharmacologic importanceof this epithelium, its complex structure and heterogeneous cell compositionhave impeded progress in studying the integrated functioning of the intacttissue. Electron probe X-ray microanalysis has provided an unusual oppor-tunity to study the different cell populations in different regions of the intactciliary epithelium. This chapter summarizes the advances in our understandingmade possible by exploiting this technique.
