The profile distribution, generation, and emission of CO_2 and CH_4 in the bog soils of four experimental plots in European Russia and Eastern Siberia have been studied using original experimental procedures. The effective diffusion coefficients of gases were determined in peatlands for the entire range of aeration porosity; upward and downward vertical fluxes were evaluated. The total production of gases by the peatland during the growing season was estimated from the kinetic balance model of theirbehavior in the soil. It was shown that the generation intensity of greenhouse gases in bogs could significantly (by 10-20 percent) exceed their emission from the surface. Information about the gas-generating function of bogs is used for the determination of their carbon sequestration capacity.
