Getaway cars, that is. There's a world of difference between a road novel-in which one or more characters climb into a 15-year-old Oldsmobile and head off in search of adventure-and that special brand of crime fiction starring drivers of getaway cars. Road-novel heroes usually come of age in the course of their travels, but getaway-car drivers rarely get away. Driving is almost always an obsession for the typically silent types behind the wheels of getaway cars; they drive because they must, even if it means a getaway trip to nowhere.
