摘要

Philadelphia played host June 10-15 to some 7,400 corporate, sci-tech, law, museum, and other special librarians at the 91st annual conference of the Special Libraries Association. The conference theme, "Independence to Interdependence: The Next Phase in the Information Revolution," called on knowledge professionals to take and keep a leadership role in managing technological change. Incoming President Donna Scheeder, deputy assistant director of LC's Congressional Research Service, reminded conference-goers that "Special librarianship was born in answer to the print explosion.... For SLA, change is our tradition; why notlead the change?" SLA will be taking a hard look at changes of its own this year: At its winter meeting it set up task forces to look at the association's image, membership composition, and partnerships with other organizations. As part of revamping the association's image, one of the task forces will consider changing the SLA name, perhaps to one with less emphasis on the library as a place. Scheeder, whose assistants were passing out buttons that read "SLA is people, not buildings," wants to emphasize the benefits of personal membership and depict librarians as "information architects." BENDER TO RETIRE Change is certainly on the horizon for SLA Executive Director David R. Bender, who at the close of the conference announced his intention to retire as of July 31, 2001. Bender, who has led the second-largest library association in North America since 1979, said that his was "the best job in the world." Citing his sense that "these may be the best of times" for SLA, Bender remarked that "the time for significant changes in leadership ... is during good times.
