Ferrate Treatment Technologies LLC [FTT], Orlando, FL, US, designed and developed the Ferrator? to satisfy the need for generating ferrate on site, which required the oxidation step of ferric iron to ferrate+6. The Ferrator reduced the chemical cost of a pound of ferrate to approximately $5 and made its use in industrial water purification a reality when employed. It utilized the most efficient and cost-effective way to generate ferrate where aqueous chemical oxidation of ferric iron utilized chlorine in a caustic medium. Careful consideration needed to be given to its dose and application after ferrate was generated on site. Ferrate was utilized extensively for the removal of color in drinking water and wastewater effluents, and had been a primary focus of research for the removal of metal.
