BECAUSE organic apple production is in a state of flux, no one can provide a "how-to" list that will work for all growers in all locations. The good news is that methods do exist for producing apples organically in the Northeastern U.S. The bad news is that profitability of those systems remains questionable.The Organic Trade Association (OTA) recently created a Farmers Advisory Council (FAC) to gather input, engage small- to medium-sized organic growers and ranchers, and formalize and improve two-way communication between OTA and organic producers. Foundingmembers of the council are California Certified Organic Farmers Inc. and Cooperative Regions of Organic Producer Pools (CROPP). FAC gives organic farmers a voice to directly influence OTA's policy work, and allows OTA to better represent the diversity of organic producers in its policy and advocacy work. Service eligibility defines afarmer as someone who owns, leases, or is a partner in an organic farm, has a full-time functional role as an organic farmer, and derives his or her primary income from an organic farm.
