Investigation was undertaken to achieve rapid multiplication and improvement of Ageratina, riparia (Asteraceae)by plant regeneration from callus. Tissue cultures of A, riparia derived from leaf-, stem-and root tissues were cultivated on modified MURASHIGE and SKOOG, 1962 and ABou-MANDOUR, 1977 media. Growth of all callus cultures was stimulated by the phytohormones applied (KIN, BAP, IAA, NAA, 2,4-D). Calli derived from leaves exhibited the strangest response to hormone treatment, followed by calli from stems and roots. Highest growth rates were obtained on MS with 0,3 mg I-1 KIN! and 2 mg l(-1) IAA, and AM with 2 mg l(-1) of KIN, IAA and BAP. Intact plants were regenerated from calli derived from both leaves and roots. When roots of these regenerates were cultivated on MS with 0,3 mg.l(-1) KIN and 4 mg.l(-1) NAA they became green if originated from leaf callus or grey white with many roothairs if originated from root callus. With MS + 2 mg.l(-1) BAP these roots again formed calli. On MS with high concentrations of 2,4-D (4 - 8 mg.l(-1))root regeneration was suppressed Micropropagated plants were successfully transferred to soil.
