摘要

The explosive growth of the Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) in recent years has impact on almost every field of human activity while its effect on librarianship is more intensive owing to the information component attached to the professior. For the first time in history, the WWW with its suite of standards and respective technologies made significant strides in the field of information transfer and knowledge management by liberating the basic static nature of the ordinary text, making it dynamic and powerful. The Web has opened up a new school of thought, the hypertext world, with its unquestioned ability in distributed computing on a global scale. The purpose of this paper is to give information professionals a sense of what is unique about the design of Web Pages on the WWW and an indication in general terms of what types of information and materials can be disseminated through this medium. It describes the very need for a Site, its unlimited scope, opportunities and implications and suggests several guidelines for Web site development that will enhance the potential for improved visibility of the library/information centre, its information resources, systems and the array of services, to be seen and utilised by outside world. Also discusses the method of creating an HTML document supplemented with advanced applications of DHTML, XML, VRML, scripting languages, style sheets etc., how the page could be published in the Net and further publicising the page.
