摘要

As the famous introduction to Thomas Aquinas's treatise On Being and Essence says, "a little error in the beginning leads to a great one in the end." This sentence, also mentioned by Averroes in his commentary to De anima (3, comm. 4), comes from Aristotle (De caelo, 1.5, 271b 8-10), who perhaps forged it after a remark made by Socrates in Plato's Cratylus (436d). édouard Mehl certainly has this long tradition of philosophical wisdom in mind when, in the Introduction to Descartes et la fabrique du monde, he writes that an initial inattention to details, as slight as it may be, can lead to great misunderstandings of our past and, most importantly, present history (p. 28). Aquinas took Aristotle's sentence as a pretext to begin an inquiry into the first concepts of our intellect: being and essence. Mehl aims to show that Descartes's role in the history of ontology has been often misconstrued due to the neglect of one of the most important tasks of the Cartesian enterprise, "to build a new world" (p. 13). From Pascal's emphasis on the Cartesian ego cogito, to a reading emerging in a certain "German tradition" (p. 15 n.2), which includes thinkers like Hegel, Husserl, and Heidegger, the persistent problem was the lonely ego. Just as Aquinas began his philosophical reconstruction from the very first notions of our mind, Descartes too demolished a long-standing view of the world by building a new one from the ground up, a primis fundamentis. Understanding these prima fundamenta-without gratuitously pointing at the subjectivity that thinks-is possible, but it requires a detailed and exceptionally erudite study of Descartes's work and the context in which it was developed. This is the sort of study masterfully delivered by Mehl. It goes almost without saying that, being the result of such a thorough study, the book is intended for a scholarly audience, and is therefore hardly accessible to a wider readership.
