摘要

The Geiger Counter was one of the most widely known scientific instruments to have been developed during early radioactivity research. It was one of the first electrical devices that detected α, β, and γ-radiation well. Walter Müller developed the first prototype counter in Kiel, Germany in 1928, supervised by his former doctoral advisor, Hans Geiger. Hans Geiger found that the new cylindrical design of the counter could be operated under atmospheric pressure without the need for a stable vacuum and with a negative potential on the point. The instrument was also sensitive to α and β radiation at the same time. The Geiger-Point-Counter was not easy to handle, as it was difficult to activate the point in the right manner and to operate it over a longer period.
