摘要

The bark caterpillar, Indarbela quadrinotata Walker is a polyphagous pest, feeding on forest trees belonging to many families as well as a number of horticultural and ornamental trees. It is an important pest of Casuarina equisetifolia in Tamil Nadu.At present, the management of the bark caterpillar is mainly based on chemical insecticides, which has several limitations, especially in forest plantations. Therefore an entomopathogenie fungus, Beauveria bassiana, and botanicals like Neem Seed Kernel Extract (NSKE) 5 per cent and Neem oil 5 per cent were evaluated against the bark caterpillar, in a five-year-old Casuarina equisetifolia plantation at Puduppattinam area of Tamil Nadu. The results showed that the fungus at a concentration of 4xl08 spores/ ml was effective in controlling the pest under field conditions. There was no significant difference in larval mortality, when the two methods of application, i.e. spraying with a hand sprayer and injecting by a hypodermic syringe, were tested. The Neem oil 5 per cent was found to cause significant larval mortality when compared with NSKE 5 per cent. The results indicate the potential of using non-chemical means like B. bassisna and Neem oil (5%) in controlling the bark caterpillar.
