A major outbreak of Ebola virus infection occurred in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (Kivu and Ituri provinces) between August 2018 and May 2020. It was the tenth Ebola epidemic recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the second largest outbreak in the world. During this epidemic, a total of 3481 Ebola virus-infected patients were identified, 66% of whom died of the disease (1,2). The measures implemented to control this outbreak, involving broad international cooperation, focused on identifying, isolating, testing and, where necessary, treating anyone likely to have been infected. At the height of the epidemic, 6000 such alerts were received each day. Dedicated treatment centres were set up. Epidemiological monitoring of the spread of the epidemic was undertaken. This was the first outbreak in which vaccination with Ebola vaccine rVSV-Zebov was performed from the outset of the epidemic (see "Ebola vaccine rVSV-Zebov (Ervebo°)", pp. 35-37). For each confirmed case, up to 200 contacts, contacts of contacts, and 3rd degree contacts were identified. Hundreds of workers were trained to administer the vaccine, and more than 300 000 people were vaccinated (1,2).
