It was with great interest that we read the manuscript concerning the role of Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) infection as an aetiopathogenic agent of chronic prostatitis, by Ouzounova-Raykova et al. (2010) recently published in Andrologia. In this study, the Authors examined 98 male patients to establish the presence or absence of Ct in expressed prostatic secretions and evaluate the role of this bacterium in the inflammation of the prostate. The Authors, by means of both polymerase chain reaction and culture on McCoy cell analyses, stated that Ct is not so frequently detected in their patient population but suggested that Ct may be accepted as one of the aetiological agents of chronic prostatitis and testing for this infection is highly recommended (Ouzounova-Raykova et al., 2010).
