摘要

2005 marks the 75th Anniversary of Cleveland Botanical Garden. For this and the next issue of the Bulletin, we pause to look back at the Garden's recent history and the thriving accomplishments of the past 25 years. During the glacial period in Ohio, what is now known as Lake Erie was called Lake Warren. It was a much larger lake with a shoreline extending further south than the present day shoreline. Through the action of wind, sand-hills began to form. Eventually plant communities developed on these "fossil dunes." White oak and black oak became abundant, punctuated with expanses of both large and small blue stem grasses — hence the name Oak openings. The Woodland Garden is a relic of this fragile plant community. The oaks were harvested to makeway for farming and the eventual development of the Cleveland cityscape, but our little woodland was spared the axe.
