摘要

Hemoproteins are responsible for the oxygen delivery in living organisms. They contain a heme prostethic group consisting of an iron ion held in a heterocyclic ring, known as a porphyrin (Fig. 1). Protoporphyrins are tetrapyrroles; protoporphyrin IX is a carrier molecule for divalent cations. Together with iron(II) it is called heme. Heme is linked either covalently or noncovalently to the protein. The iron in the heme readily undergoes oxidation and reduction and can bind to gaseous molecules such as oxygen, carbon monoxide and dioxide, nitric monoxide, hydrogen sulfide (O2, CO, CO2, NO, H2S). This strategy has been maintained throughout the evolution.
