Instructors charged with teaching an introductory course in epidemiology have an extensive list of textbook options [1—8]. As the syllabi of introductory courses in epidemiology do not vary much across academic programs, the main distinguishing feature of a particularly good text is the ability to clearly explain important fundamental concepts to an uninitiated audience. In their new book Epidemiology Matters, Keyes and Galea did exactly that and did it in a novel engaging way guided by what they call "epidemiology of consequence." The approach to teaching advocated in the new book builds on the rich tradition of viewing epidemiology as "pragmatic" science [9].
