This June's inaugural Sustainable Internal Combustion Engine Symposium, organized by Engine + Powertrain Technology International, will examine the future prospects of the ICE. Here, four members of the conference's advisory board share their thoughts on the road ahead. The Sustainable Internal Combustion Engine Symposium, which takes place June 16-18, at the ICS, Messe Stuttgart, Germany, will see 100+ expert speakers - each sourced by the team at Engine + Powertrain Technology International - discuss and debate the future of gasoline, diesel and alternative-fuel IC engines, via four dedicated streams. "I hope that the symposium will provide a more realistic view and assessment on the mid-term future of transportation and mobility, reducing the emotional and ideological impacts on the public debate," comments Thomas Korfer, FEV Group. Korfer will oversee the 'Diesel Beyond 2030' stream, which will examine effective onboard diagnostics and advance powertrain monitoring for diesel vehicles, the development of diesel, and what to expect in 2030 and beyond. "I'm looking forward to an open dialog between industry experts on pathways to net zero CO_2 and effective zero-emissions engines," adds Professor Sam Akehurst at the University of Bath, who will oversee 'The Transition to Euro 7 & Reduction in CO_2 Emissions' stream. "This could be a change to sustainable fuels, integration into efficient combustion systems and how future engines will be developed specifically for integration into electrified powertrains. There are lots of evolutionary changes in engine technology, but we need to understand system level requirements and how these technologies are best joined together." Dr Andrew Atkins, Ricardo Innovations, will help steer the 'Engine Development Beyond the Bounds of Current Technology' stream. "The symposium will provide a window on developments that show how the ICE, in tandem with other technologies, can provide a path toward a more sustainable transportation system in the near future." Marko Certic, AVL List, will host 'The Evolution of Clean and Alternative Fuels' stream, which will look at the possibilities of synthetic, new and renewable fuel technology to support the internal combustion engine.
