You can't see it from ground level, but Chicago (Illinois, USA) boasts the highest expanse of green roof area in North America. A green roof involves the creation of "contained" green space on top of a building or other human-made structure. The system is an extension of the existing roof. It includes a waterproofing and root repellant system, a drainage system, filter cloth, a lightweight growing medium, and plants (www.greenroofs.net). According to Chris Counts, a landscape architect with Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates Inc., green roofs generally use much shallower soil depths than gardens (between 3 and 6 inches) and lightweight aggregate soils, rather than typical garden soil.
