The acute toxicity of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and Lindane (gamma-hexachlorocyclohexane) to three size groups (representing different ages) of the West African freshwater clam Egeria radiata (Lamarck) was estimated in static toxicity tests over 96 h. Behavioural aberrations occurred in clams exposed to toxicants and were dose-dependent, while clams in control basins maintained normal activities throughout the test. period with no mortality among them. Mortality among ail sizes of clams exposed to cadmium and lead was consistently dose-dependent, but variable mortalities were recorded among medium and large size clams exposed to lead and Lindane. LC50 values of 7.73, 180.13 and 94.72 mg.l(-1) were obtained for cadmium, lead and Lindane respectively, in small clams; 7.73, 399.65 and 170.92 mg.l(-1) for cadmium, lead and Lindane in medium size clams and 9.44, 283.30 and 103.47 mg.l(-1) for cadmium, lead and Lindane in large size clams. Cadmium was the most toxic of three substances used, while small clams (aged 1 year) were the most vulnerable to all substances used. Medium size clams (aged 2 years) were the most resistant to both lead, and Lindane, followed by large size clams (aged 3 years and above).
