According to a report from CERI-the Canadian Energy Research Institute-producers in both Canada's oilsands and shale plays could improve operational efficiency and environmental performance. For many projects, the organization said, energy consumption can be reduced by 10 simply by adopting best practices, installing up-to-date equipment, and the like. For in-situ SAGD (steam assisted gravity drainage) oilsands projects particularly, CERI noted that the use of downhole pumps to extract oil-rather than relying on reservoir pressure-can significantly reduce energy use. Such projects can also reduce energy use by supplementing or replacing steam with solvents, though poor solvent recovery rates may make this uneconomical. The technique can also help remove asphaltenes from the crude, however, and in cases where steam is replaced entirely by solvent, can considerably reduce capital costs.
