摘要

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2008) defines intimate partner violence {IPV; sometimes interchanged with the term domestic violence) as "violence that occurs between two people who are in a close relationship." The intimate partner may be a current or former domestic partner or a dating partner. Violence often begins with emotional abuse and escalates to include physical abuse. Rarely, once begun, does the cycle of abuse stop. Instead, the abuse worsens over time, putting the victim of abuse at risk for serious health conditions and, ultimately, may cause death. Research in the United States and worldwide reveals that women are most often the victims of IPV (Garcia-Moreno, Jansen, Heise, & Watts, 2005; Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000). Nearly one third of women living in the United States report that they have been physically assaulted or raped by an intimate partner (CDC, 2008).
