Akhough Iraq has been estimated to have extensive, easily-accessible oil reserves—as many as 143B bbl, with much of the country still to be explored—concerns remain about how quickly and effectively production will be ramped up approaching 2020. The country last year produced upwards of 3MM b/d of crude, but has also downgraded production estimates from 12MM b/d by 2017 to 10MM b/d by 2020, a figure which analysts including the International Energy Agency (TEA) have called implausible. According to the IEA, a best-case scenario would see 9MM b/d of production by 2020, but 6.1MM b/d by the same end-point is far more likely, and in the event of any growth-suppressing obstacles, output could grow to just 4MM b/d by the end of the decade.
