Despite international energy majors such as BP, Chevron, and Shell boasting healthy 1Q profits as a result of crude prices that were 15 higher than 1Q 2011, many of these majors face under-lying challenges ahead. Specifically, analysts note the decrease in upstream production cited by BP (down 6.3 vol), Chevron (down 6.1 vol), ConocoPhillips (down 5.1 vol), ExxonMobil (down 7.7 vol), and Total (down 4.9 vol) from levels seen in 1Q 2011 and the tougher downstream conditions related to decreasing transportation fuels demand in the EU and US. The more difficult downstream environment, particularly in Europe, has led these majors to scale back refining operations. Chevron (down 10.8), Shell (down 8.2), and Total (down 9) all reported declines in refining throughput in the quarter compared to year-ago levels.
