摘要

O January 11, 2007, space got a lot more crowded. The population of "space junk" - manmade objects in Earth orbit that no longer serve a useful purpose - literally exploded that day, when the People's Republic of China blew up one of its Earth-orbiting satellites. This successful test of a Chinese anti-satellite system created more space debris than any event in history. It also marked the opening volley in what proved to be the worst year yet for polluting near-Earth space-Space debris has been a growing problem for 50 years. The oldest piece of space junk belongs to the United States. The Vanguard 1 spacecraft - an aluminum sphere just 6.5 inches (16.5 centimeters) across and weighing 3,24 pounds (1 47 kilograms) - was launched in March 1958 and ceased operations in May 1964. It's been orbiting Earth silently ever since, and will continue to do so for centuries.
