Ever since the 1950s the run-off shed observatory has become very popular, no doubt in part down to Patrick Moore's famous double-ended example that covers his 320mm f/6 Newtonian. A telescope within such a structure does not even need to be permanently mounted for visual observing: many amateurs simply use the supplied tripod with an alignment mark scratched on the concrete floor under each leg.
