The Eureka Tower project is located on a site underlain by complex geology. The high strength of both the lower basalt present at the site and the siltstone required the development of special drilling tools and base cleaning methods, unable to be described here. The upper basalt present was simply a complicating nuisance. A thorough site investigation programme allowed confident adoption of design stresses for rock socketed piles, significantly higher than previously used. Strong co-operation between the builder, piling contractor and the geotechnical consultant further allowed the introduction of the innovative alternative of highly loaded CFA piles founding directly onto very high strength basalt. The effectiveness of this alternative was proven through both test piles and dynamic proof testing of prototype piles. Above all, it is considered this project demonstrated the importance and value of thorough and extensive site investigation. Without this level of investigation, the innovative and pioneering piling solutions would not have been possible. The savings made by having this data outweighed the cost of the investigation many fold.
