摘要

Some 22 years ago at Sydney University I spent some time examining the entrails of Hawkesbury Sandstone under a scanning electron microscope. My interest at the time was primarily in:· what gives the sandstone its "cohesive" strength, and· what makes this strength so sensitive to the degree of saturation?I satisfied my curiosity in regard to these questions but during the course of the work came across a material and structure in the sandstone which no geologist I spoke to at the time could explain. I had hoped over the years that someone would come out of the woodwork and explain what I could see in the SEM photos. That has not happened. So now I have scanned some of the old Polaroid photos for this Note in the hope that someone will provide closure to this matter.
