Imagine an abalone farm with no power or feed costs. A company at Augusta in the south-west of Western Australia is establishing artificial reefs on selected sandy areas near seagrass beds. Using hatchery-bred animals from local broodstock, the abalone shelter in the artificial reefs and feed on drift algae. An almost 12 month trial has shown good growth and survival rates prompting the company to apply for more lease area to allow for a planned expansion in production. Brad Adams and his family havebeen involved with abalone as long as he can remember. "Dad (Terry) had professionally dived for abalone since the f960s and my brothers Darren, Nathan and I have helped him since we were kids." Brad dived professionally for 12 years until deciding to retire and concentrate his energies into developing the ranching technology; his brothers continue to operate the family abalone licence.
