AUSTRALIAN wine industry projections that another 40,000 hectares of new vineyards will be needed by 2022 to meet expected growth targets leaves the way open for farmers and others to capitalise on opportunities in land with grape-growing potential. In June, The Winemakers Federation of Australia predicted an increase of more than 300% in the value of wine exports by 2010 to 1.7 billion dollar and a 70% rise in total wine production to increase the country's share of the world wine market from 2% to5%. For this to be achieved, an 80% increase in the area sown to wine grapes would be required, the federation said.
